The Jacobite and Cary's Rebellions by Rick Brainard Everyone knows about the American and French Revolutions and the consequences that they wrought on the stage of world history. These two events in the 18th century are but two revolts against the established order of the era.
There were other minor revolts during the period also. We shall look at two of them and discover how politics and religion played an important part in them. The Jacobite and Cary's rebellions also played a role in the development of world history. Jacobite Rebellion 1689 - 1746The Jacobite Rebellion was an attempt to restore the Stuarts to the throne of England. This rebellion lasted 57 years. The crux of the matter was the two pretenders to the throne, James Francis Stuart, and Charles Edward Stewart, attempted to take over the throne by force. This would all end at Culloden in 1746. The Stuarts were Catholics. This faith was looked upon as being in league with England's current enemies, the French and Spanish. The Catholic religion was synonymous with Devil worship. Religion in the 18th century was a very serious matter. It was believed that if you were a Catholic, the Pope in Rome controlled you. In 1710, Edward Hyde had come over from England to administer the colony as the deputy Governor. Thomas Cary, whom Hyde was to replace, refused to step down, thus causing tensions to mount further until 1711 when armed conflict between the two broke out between the two factions. This rebellion ended in the summer of 1711. The tensions between the two factions remained however, and it was contended that the Cary faction had offered rich rewards to the Tuscarora to attack the followers of Hyde. This would lead to the outbreak of the Tuscarora war of 1711. - Catechna Historic Site
