Named after the French word meaning little wheel, roulette is a casino game in which players can choose to place bets on a range of things. You’re able to bet on either a single number on the wheel, multiple numbers, colors red or black, whether the number is odd or even, whether the numbers are low (1-18), or whether the numbers are high (19-36).
In order to determine the winning number a color, someone known as the croupier will spin the wheel in one direction before spinning a ball in the opposite direction around a circular track that is tilted running around the circumference of the wheel. Eventually, the ball will lose speed and fall onto the wheel and into one of the 37 colored numbered pockets, or 38 if you’re playing American roulette.
The first form of roulette, now known as American roulette was invented in 18th century France. A century earlier, an initial form of roulette had already been developed as mathematician Blaise Pascal searched for a perpetual motion machine, or a machine that is able to move without any energies, to me and you.
The roulette wheel is thought to be a combination of the English wheel games Reiner, Ace of Hearts, E.O. and Roly Poly and the Italian board games Hoca and Biribi.
The game has been played as it is today since the late 18th century. The roulette wheels used in casinos of Paris at the time of their inception had red for the single zero and black for the double zero. It was only in the 1800s when the green colored zeros were introduced to avoid confusion.
Decades later in Germany, the single 0style roulette wheel was introduced to compete against other casinos which offered the traditional version. The popularity of roulette continued to grow and by the 19th century it had spread all over Europe and has even made its way across the Atlantic to the United States thus becoming one of the most famous casino games of all time.
Times hardened during the 1860s when the German government completely abolished gambling and it was because of this François and Louis Blanc, the inventors of the single 0style wheel, moved to Monte Carlo as it remained the home of the last legal casino operation in the whole of Europe.
Here, the single zero roulette wheel become the favored game and did so all over the world with the United States being the exception, as they favoured the original double zero wheel. As the French double zero made it's around America, the wheel had to be placed on top of the table to stop devices being hidden in the table or wheel due to a high number of cheating by operators and gamblers alike.
During the early 1900s, the only casino towns known were Monte Carlo with the traditional zero French wheel and Las Vegas which of course held the American double zero wheel. That soon changed as the century went on, however, and by the late 1970s, casinos began to crop up everywhere.
Roulette’s popularity has continued to this day and it is still one of the most famous casino games in the world. Hundreds of millions are spent each year at the wheel. Online roulette is also a popular pastime on casinos sites, with live editions of both European and American roulette being frequented my millions.
