Encyclopedia of 18th Century History

The Encyclopédie ou Dictionnaire raisonné des sciences, des arts et des métiers, par une Société de Gens de lettres, edited and published by Denis Diderot, was a cooperative project. It contained articles discussing the advanced opinions of Voltaire, Montesquieu, D'Alembert and others about philosophy, politics and religion. It is considered the great intellectual achievement of the Enlightenment. 

In this tradition, we have created the Encyclopedia of 18th century History. This is a cooperative project that include a series of pages with articles, facts, biographies and other information about the 18th century. Each entry has further resources (if available) on the topic discussed, be it found on this Website or other Websites on the Internet.

You Can Contribute:

If you have done research on a topic or individual within the 18th century, or just know something about the era, you can take part. I would like to invite you, the readers of this site, to contribute your knowledge to this project. If your entry is accepted for inclusion in the Encyclopedia of 18th Century History, you are welcome to include your real name or a nickname in the credit line. (For legal purposes, we ask that you include your real name when you submit the article and give us permission to reprint it online, but your real name will be on the article only if you indicate that it's okay to put it there.) You can also link your name or nickname to your email address if you'd like to hear from readers about your contribution, or you can link your credit line to your personal or professional Web site. This is a great opportunity to build traffic on your Web site. You can choose not to have any links in your credit line.

Please join and assist others to learn about the 18th century by contributing to this project.

How To Submit an Entry:

  1. First, pick a term, or a topic, and describe it in one to four paragraphs (150 word limit, or about 850 characters.)  Or pick an individual who made an important contribution to history, and tell a little about him or her.
  2. Second, enter up to three sources you have used to write about your submission. (Sources are optional but I recommend highly that you list at least one so that users can follow up on the information. Sources can be online (web pages) or print (books, articles).
  3. Third, List up to Three links related to the entry and are helpful for readers to further their study of the topic. (These links can be on this site or elsewhere on the Internet. Please cut-and-paste the URL (the page address that begins http://) so that it's accurate.)
  4. Fourth, Tell us how you want your byline to read. You may include your Full name, first name or just a nickname. If you want your name to be linked, You can have the link to be to either a web page (personal or professional), or to your email address.  Editors Note: Even if you don't want your email address to appear on the page, please include it with your submission so that I can contact you about your entry.
  5. Finally, after you have finished writing your submission you can submit it to us by going to our Contact page and send it to us. When you submit the entry for inclusion, please note in your email to us that it is for the Encyclopedia of 18th century History Please allow up to 48 hours for us to contact you and inform you that the submission is live on the site, or it needs further work.

I regret that I may have to reject some submissions. Accuracy, relevance and quality are important to the users of this site, so please be sure of your information and please make sure your spelling and grammar are correct. If you include your email address on your submission, I'll be able to send back any entry that needs more work so that you can resubmit it. I reserve the right to edit entries.
